YouTube Video Thanksgiving Turkey Butter from Antique Chocolate Molds

Check out our New YouTube Video..we used a Vintage Turkey Chocolate Mold to form Individual Turkey "Butter's" for the Thanksgiving table. Please use a mold release such as Pam on the inside of the mold prior to use. I just let the butter soften on the counter--pressed it into both halves of the mold--then pressed the halves together and clipped them closed. Freezer for at least 30 minutes..very important to keep the butter very cold. When asked most people don't think they "know" chocolate molds..until they are reminded of their Easter Baskets...many Americans were fortunate enough to have experienced molded chocolate in the form of that most Adored Chocolate Easter Bunny - precisely placed in our Easter Baskets for discovery on Easter Morning.

Meanwhile, molded Chocolate was popular for occasions and events all over Germany and the rest of Europe. Everything from Santa's to Victorian Children to animals and monuments were available in molded chocolate!

So, obviously I'm excited for Easter...I can't wait to see what kind of molded chocolate Bunny the Easter Bunny will bring me this year!! (crossing my fingers for Dark Chocolate)

There is always something magical about a piece of molded chocolate with the crisp lines, exquisite detail, and of course the sumptuous chocolate. Amazingly, not all molded chocolates are shaped like truffles, hearts or squares… there are over 50,000 different designs for chocolate molds.

Diverse styles range from stern German Santa’s, elegantly dressed Easter Bunnies, Victorian children playing with toys, national monuments, household items, holiday themes, a zoo full of animals, and everything in between.
The Anton Reiche Company began manufacturing metal chocolate molds in Dresden, Germany during the 1870’s. Fewer than 20 companies followed suit – producing increasingly beautiful and always intricately designed molds. Very large “Show Case” molds were produced for chocolate shop windows and some of them stood more than three feet tall!

A whimsical and unique mold design I discovered the other day was a full size champagne bottle with a custom “label” soldered on to it for a Patisserie in Belgium. When the chocolate was taken out of the mold –Voilà- the label would be “embossed” on the bottle and would even be visible beneath the foil wrap.

Many candy shops and chocolatiers had custom molds manufactured by mold makers with their names or logos applied to the molds; Hershey’s Chocolate in Pennsylvania as well as Whitman’s had custom molds made for them by Anton Reiche in Germany.

The German Santa Antique Chocolate Mold in the photo is approximately 80 years old and still usable for molding. Please take off your glasses or stand back from your computer screen when viewing the molded chocolate in the photo – it will look much better…

Metal chocolate mold production in Europe all but ceased during WWII and plastic became the material of choice by the 1960’s. New York City had three companies manufacturing metal molds-two are still in business.

Currently, there is quite a diverse selection of plastic chocolate molds available, Tomric is a leading manufacturer, as they reproduce many antique chocolate mold designs in plastic.

The above photo shows a pair of German made “Bavarian Dressed” Bunnies ready for a romantic day in the country. You can see that no detail was forgotten on this gorgeous pair of antique chocolate molds!

The joy of giving or receiving a chocolate molded bunny at Easter brings back cherished childhood memories and is hard to compare to anything…

Using Your Antique Chocolate Molds for Art...That Includes Chocolate...

Especially around the Holidays ~ Antique Chocolate Mold Collectors Desire to Create Art...from their Adored and Admired Objects of Art...Antique Chocolate Molds!

There are so Many Wonderful ways to Use These Highly Detailed and Meticulously Made Chocolate Molds...

A few tips:

Always make sure to clean your molds well..no rust...dry in oven at lowest temp for no more than 10 minutes...wipe with oil--pepperming, olive, (some swear by Pam spray) as a mold release...

Warmed, Scented Beeswax poured into Antique Chocolate Molds produce the most Delightful Figures that will last for years and Smell just Heavenly...add a wick during pouring..the Worlds Best Candles!!

Chalkware (plaster of paris) from the craft store poured into a mold offers many possibilities for crafting....critical points--tap out all air bubbles and make sure plaster is completely dry before removing mold.

Painting can be very easy... Chocolate Colored Santa's to expert level..as seen in the detail of Vaillancourt Folk Art Santa's.

Depending on your Crafting Group...Wilton makes "chocolate" disks that melt in the micro and work well with chocolate molds...just refrigerate until set.

Tempering chocolate or chocolate chips is not as hard as it sounds - completely microwavable in minutes...directions all over the internet..depending on white, milk or dark chocolate...

German Bunny Candy Container - Detail

This is one of the Candy Containers shown in my new book on..."Candy Containers" I just Love the detail...Venetian Dew (tiny glass balls) on the front of his shirt and gorgeous floral "wallpaper print" inside his basket-he's very worn-almost Velveteen Rabbit status-really sweet though...of course his head comes off for the surprise candy stash..what's not to Love?

Antique Chocolate Molds, Anton Reiche in Dresden & Milton Hershey in PA

The last time I was in Dresden and able to visit with Monica Tinhofer was in November for my "New Book Signing". Monica Tinhofer is Anton Reiche's Great-Great Granddaughter. Anton Reiche is considered to be the Greatest Chocolate Mold Manufacturer in the World. Monica is always full of very interesting facts and childhood memories--all very vivid. During lunch one day she casually stated that Anton Reiche had a wonderful friendship with Mr. Hershey in America. Immediately-I thought, darn it--way too late to get that information into my book on Antique Chocolate Molds--uh...published 5 years ago :0) So, I thought I would put the information out here..now! Anton Reiche manufactured custom metal chocolate molds for the Hershey Company in the early 1900's--The large Hershey Block Mold is Marked Anton Reiche - Dresden, Germany. Just thought you might like to know..
